How to Trim a Video: Remove Unwanted Footage with Precision

A complete guide to trimming video clips — removing dead space, tightening edits, splitting clips, and using ripple delete to keep your timeline clean.

Trimming versus cutting: understanding the difference

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different operations. Trimming adjusts the in point or out point of an existing clip — it changes where the clip starts or ends without splitting it into pieces. The original media file is never touched; you are simply choosing how much of it to show. Trimming is non-destructive by design.

Cutting, on the other hand, splits one clip into two separate clips at a chosen point. Each resulting piece is an independent clip you can move, delete, or trim further. Cutting is how you remove a section from the middle of a clip: you cut at the start of the unwanted section, cut at the end, then delete the middle piece.

In practice you use both constantly. Trimming handles the rough shape — getting each clip to approximately the right length. Cutting handles precision removal — eliminating specific moments, cleaning up mistakes, or splitting a clip so different sections can be treated differently.

Trimming from the timeline edges

The fastest way to trim a clip in LuxOpus is by dragging its edges directly in the timeline. Make sure you are in Select mode — press V or click the arrow tool in the toolbar. Move your mouse over the left or right edge of any clip. A white trim handle appears. When you see it, click and drag.

Dragging the right edge to the left shortens the clip from the end. Dragging it to the right extends it — up to the original length of the source file. If your clip is already trimmed and you want to restore footage you previously cut off, simply drag the edge back out. No footage is ever permanently removed.

Dragging the left edge works the same way in reverse: drag right to trim the beginning, drag left to restore the original start. The preview viewport updates live as you drag, so you can see exactly which frame you are trimming to without guessing.

Splitting a clip with the Razor tool

To split a clip at a specific moment, move the playhead to that exact point in the timeline. You can do this by clicking on the timeline ruler, or by playing the video and pressing Space to pause at precisely the right frame. Then press S to activate the Razor tool and click anywhere on the clip to split it. Two separate clips now exist where one did before.

Alternatively, with a clip selected in Select mode, press Ctrl+K (or Cmd+K on Mac) to split at the current playhead position without switching tools. This is faster when you are cutting multiple clips in rapid succession.

After splitting, you can trim, move, or delete either half independently. To remove the portion between two cuts, select the unwanted middle clip and press Delete or Backspace. The surrounding clips stay where they are, leaving a gap in the timeline.

Ripple delete: removing footage and closing the gap

A regular delete removes a clip and leaves a blank gap in the timeline. Everything that came after the deleted clip stays in its original position, which is useful when you are dealing with multiple tracks and need other elements to stay aligned. But on a single-track timeline, you almost always want to close the gap after deleting.

This is what ripple delete does. Select the clip you want to remove and press Shift+Delete (or right-click and choose Ripple Delete). The clip is removed and every subsequent clip on that track slides left to fill the gap, keeping your project tight and continuous.

Be careful with ripple delete on multi-track projects. Closing a gap on one track can cause clips on other tracks to fall out of sync if they rely on the original timing. In those cases, use a regular delete and manually adjust the following clips, or use linked clips so all tracks move together.

Trimming the head and tail of your project

Most raw footage starts and ends with unwanted material: a few seconds of camera movement while getting into position, a moment of hesitation before the subject starts speaking, or footage shot after the action ended. These frames add up quickly and make even good content feel padded. The first discipline of trimming is to cut these moments ruthlessly.

A useful rule from professional editors: the cut should happen on the last frame that matters, not a moment after. If someone finishes a sentence and then pauses before the next one, cut on the last word. Do not let silences accumulate — each one is dead weight the viewer has to sit through. Similarly, start clips as late as you can: find the first interesting frame and begin there.

After trimming the head and tail of every clip, watch your project from start to finish. Mark any section that feels slow or padded. Then go back and trim those sections. Good editing is largely about this process repeated until nothing drags.

Trimming audio and video independently

When a video clip is placed on the timeline, it includes both its video and audio. By default, trimming the clip trims both together, which keeps them in sync. But there are cases where you want them to differ — for example, cutting away from a speaker a second before they finish talking so the audio continues over the next shot. This is called an L-cut or J-cut and is one of the most effective tools in narrative editing.

In LuxOpus, you can separate audio from video by right-clicking a clip and choosing Unlink Audio/Video. Once unlinked, the video and audio can be trimmed, moved, and deleted independently. An L-cut: extend the outgoing clip's audio a second past the video out point, trim the incoming clip's audio to start a second after its video. The result is a smooth, natural-feeling edit where sound leads or trails the picture.

After unlinking, be careful not to accidentally move one half without the other. It is easy to end up with audio and video that are out of sync. If you notice sync drift, look at the original start points of both clips — they should still show the same source timecode. Use that as your reference to re-align them.
